Duckweed is being studied by researchers around the world as a possible source of clean energy and also for the phytoremediation process (Landesman et al., ). Mushtaq Ahmad, in Plant Metal Interaction, Duckweeds are tiny, free-floating, aquatic green plants commonly found in lentic or slowly moving water bodies. The January Plant Biology Special Issue presents interesting papers about duckweed systematics, physiology, molecular biology, biotechnology and heavy metal toxicity and is dedicated to late Elias Landolt (), the “father” of modern duckweed research.   For some duckweed is a menace, for others it's a Godsend. This plant has the ability to reproduce rapidly, it can double in just 16 hours - 2 days, depending on its growing environment. This makes it either a formidable enemy or a fantastic ally. Today I would like to highlight the positive side of Reviews: Research is needed to protect the protein before its value as a bypass protein source can be estimated. However, the critical scarcity of protein resources in tropical countries indicates a need for feed technology research to enhance the use of duckweed as a direct protein source for ruminants and thus add value to the duckweed (see Leng ).

Duckweed consists of 1 to 3 fronds, or an oval shaped leave–like structure (Wedge and Burris ). These fronds grow no bigger. The closing chapters address the sequencing of the over 1 Gigabase Wolffia genomes, which could have major impacts on genome evolution and agricultural research. The duckweed or Lemnaceae family is a collection of 5 genera and 37 species of the smallest, fastest-growing flowering : Hardcover. Lemnoideae is a subfamily of flowering aquatic plants, known as duckweeds, water lentils, or water float on or just beneath the surface of still or slow-moving bodies of fresh water and known as "bayroot", they arose from within the arum or aroid family (), so often are classified as the subfamily Lemnoideae within the family : Tracheophytes.
